Have you ever heard of laser therapy? This very non-invasive treatment option might be the one you’ve been looking for. But how does it work?
Let’s take a moment to explore the idea of laser therapy—what is it, how can it help me, and should I find out if my Franklin, TN chiropractor can do it? We bet you’ll be wanting to talk to your chiropractor by the end of this post!
What is laser therapy?
Often referred to as cold laser therapy, this treatment option is theorized to assist in the reduction of pain, inflammation, swelling, edema, and a reduction in healing time in muscles. It’s a great chronic pain management tool. The trick? It’s all about photosynthesis! (sort of)
Believe it or not, your cells respond to light similar to the way plants respond to sunlight. A cold laser held close to the skin via a handheld device (like a flashlight) for about a minute can do a lot of things. This is how it works:
- The photons of light (non-thermal, so you don’t feel anything) pass through 2 to 5 centimeters of skin to reach the muscle below.
- The light energy is absorbed by your muscle and interacts with light-sensitive elements of the cells there. (This is the part similar to photosynthesis—for plants, the light is converted into usable energy. For your muscle, the light is converted into what we’ll talk about next.)
- Once light energy reaches the cellular level, activity starts to take place. The absorption of light triggers a process that is theorized to do everything we mentioned above—healing damaged tissue, reducing inflammation, and speeding up the healing process.
If you didn’t know that laser therapy was an option at your Franklin, TN chiropractor, you were missing out on a great non-invasive way to get injured muscles back into gear!
What kinds of pain does laser therapy treat?
If this treatment sounds like something your body needs, you’re probably wondering if your Franklin, TN pain problem can be solved via exposure to light. For one thing, the ACA (American Chiropractic Association) says that your injury or chronic condition must first be evaluated by a chiropractor to determine if it is neuromusculoskeletal—that is, originating with the nerves, muscles, and skeleton. Chiropractors are trained to solve pain by aligning bones, muscles, and nerves, not treat organ failure or other non-structural body issues. So maladies such as arthritis, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, knee pain, neck pain, and tendonitis are all candidates.
They must then determine that your issue is caused by aging, injury, or genetics before proceeding. Basically, if you’ve got pain from an injury or chronic pain originating from genetics or growing older, you’re a shoe-in for some Franklin, TN laser therapy. The ACA also says that laser therapy has been adopted as an essential treatment for sports injuries, as athletes appear to recover faster from injuries once receiving treatment. This should provide for many patients to receive laser therapy.
Have you ever received laser therapy?
If you’re currently seeing a Franklin, TN chiropractor, all you have to do to find out if laser therapy is an option for you is ask. If you’ve got muscular inflammation related to nerve damage or skeletal misalignment, the answer is most likely yes. And if your chiropractor doesn’t practice laser therapy in-office, he surely can recommend you to a chiropractor who does. Why not give it a shot and ask? If you’d be a first-time patient, the process should be about the same.
